Radiation injury and HBOT
This directory concerns tissue injury related to radiation. A listing does not establish that a clinic offers treatment for every radiation-related problem or that HBOT is appropriate for you.
Medicare’s policy includes osteoradionecrosis and soft-tissue radionecrosis when HBOT is added to conventional treatment. These are specific diagnoses, not a blanket coverage rule for all effects of radiation. See CMS National Coverage Determination 20.29. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment plan with your oncology team or treating clinician.
Questions before arranging a consultation
- Does this clinic assess my specific type and location of radiation injury?
- Can the hyperbaric team coordinate with my oncologist, surgeon or other treating clinician?
- Which radiation-treatment records, reports and referral details should I bring?
- What would a proposed course involve, and how will its progress be reviewed?
Insurance acceptance is different from coverage for a particular treatment. Ask the clinic and insurer about your diagnosis, treatment location, referral, prior authorization and expected out-of-pocket cost.
