Patients are usually referred by the physician treating their wound, but appointments can also be made directly with the center.
At the first contact, staff ask about the wound and the patient's general health. Before treatment begins, the team of doctors and nurses evaluates the wound and reviews the patient's health and medical history, and tests may check blood flow, tissue oxygenation and signs of infection. A treatment program is developed together with the patient's physician and usually involves regular visits to the center, with progress documented and the plan adjusted as needed. The center keeps the referring physician informed during care; patients may continue seeing their other physicians for related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and return to their own doctor for follow-up once the wound has healed. For hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the patient's doctor determines whether the treatment is appropriate. The chamber has clear sides and sits in a treatment room equipped with a TV and videos.
