Planning your visit

Patients are usually referred by the physician treating their wound, but appointments can also be made directly with the center.

At the first contact, staff ask about the wound and the patient's general health. Before treatment begins, the doctors and nurses evaluate the wound and review the patient's health and medical history, and tests may be done to check blood flow, tissue oxygenation and any infection. A treatment program is developed together with the patient's physician and usually involves regular visits to the center; progress is documented and the plan adjusted as needed. The center communicates with the patient's physician throughout care, and patients may keep seeing their other physicians for related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Once the wound has healed, patients return to their own doctor for follow-up care. Hyperbaric treatment takes place in a clear-sided chamber in a treatment room equipped with TV and videos, and the hospital's page says the patient's doctor determines whether the therapy is appropriate.
