The Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center is a UVA Health clinic on the basement level of University Medical Center in Charlottesville. It provides hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in which patients breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, and transcutaneous oximetry (TCOM), a non-invasive measurement of oxygen in body tissues. UVA lists infected diabetic leg and foot wounds, bone infections, radiation damage to bone or tissue, crush injuries, gangrene, necrotizing infections and problem skin grafts and flaps among the conditions it treats.

Planning your visit
A diagnosis from the patient's provider and an evaluation by UVA doctors are required before an appointment; patients or their providers can call the center directly.
Treatment is given in daily sessions, Monday through Friday. Each session lasts two hours, and a course is typically 20 to 50 sessions depending on the diagnosis. Before treatment starts, staff help patients prepare, including how to manage ear-pressure changes, and blankets and water are provided to help patients stay comfortable. Patients may feel pressure in the ears until the eardrums adjust, and may feel warmer at the start of a session; the chamber cools at the end. Most patients watch television or a DVD, or nap, during a session. Patients may ask for an informational visit or a tour. UVA does not offer HBOT for off-label diagnoses. The center is in Room G139 on the basement level (Level 0) of University Medical Center. Parking in the Lee Street and 11th Street garages is free with validation; bring the parking ticket when registering for the appointment. A UVA Health shuttle runs every 30 minutes on weekdays.
