Planning your visit
A prescription or referral is required. Screening may be arranged with the center’s medical director or a prescribing physician familiar with hyperbaric medicine.
Sessions last about 90–120 minutes, and a technician monitors patients throughout. Patients wear cotton scrubs; the center provides a pillow and blanket, allows water, and plays audio inside the chamber from televisions mounted outside it. Electronics, batteries, watches, pens, paper products, cosmetics such as perfume, hair spray or make-up, synthetic fabrics (nylon, rayon, wool), petroleum-based products, alcohol, cigarettes, lighters and matches are not allowed in treatment rooms. The technician can adjust the rate of pressure change to the patient's comfort. Patients are asked to tell staff about diarrhea, fever, head congestion, nausea, vomiting or pain on a treatment day, and to avoid all tobacco during a course of treatment. The number of sessions depends on the condition and the response to treatment: the FAQ says some cases need as many as 40 and many fewer than 20, while the resources page says most treatment plans are at least 20 sessions.
