Planning your visit
Referrals from a primary care physician or specialist are welcome, and self-referrals are also accepted.
Bring insurance information, a list of medications and any medical records related to the wound to the first visit. The center aims to offer same-day or next-day appointments for urgent wound care, and appointments can be requested by phone or through the online appointment form. The center's physician brochure asks clinicians to refer a problem wound when it has not progressed with standard care, involves deep tissue structures or is limb- or life-threatening, or is complicated by peripheral vascular disease, persistent edema, persistent infection, prior radiation to the area or a compromised immune status. Each HBOT session usually lasts about two hours in a clear, total-body chamber, with trained staff monitoring throughout; the number of sessions depends on the condition and typically ranges from 20 to 40, and the patient brochure describes daily treatments over 6 to 8 weeks for wound care. Patients can see out of the chamber, an attendant is always in the room, and patients can talk with the technicians by intercom; they may watch TV or a movie, listen to music or rest during treatment. For patients who feel anxious, the wound care physician can prescribe medication to help them relax. To prepare, wear comfortable clothing, avoid lotions or oils, and avoid carbonated drinks and gas-producing foods for two hours before treatment. Tobacco products should not be used during the course of treatment. Treatment clothing is provided; street clothes and shoes are not allowed in the chamber, and jewelry, watches, make-up, hair products, perfume, deodorant, cell phones, reading material, petroleum products and lighters are not permitted. Leave valuables at home. Staff check glucose levels before and after each treatment for patients with diabetes. Family members are encouraged to attend the initial orientation; after that, one companion is recommended, guests wait in the lobby during treatments, and bringing children to visits is discouraged.
