About

The Hyperbaric Treatment and Wound Care Center at Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu is run by University Health Partners of Hawaii, the faculty practice of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. The center opened in 1983 and describes itself as the only multiplace hyperbaric facility in the state, with 24/7 emergency dive medicine and hyperbaric treatment capability; it states that Divers Alert Network (DAN) has designated it the Pacific Regional Coordination Center. It lists decompression sickness, diabetic and other chronic wounds, radiation injuries, sudden hearing loss and serious infections among the conditions it treats, and offers wound care and dive medicine services such as dive physicals. Planning your visit

Patients receive a medical evaluation before starting HBOT treatment.

HBOT sessions usually last 90 minutes to two hours, and the number of treatments depends on the condition, its severity and how the patient responds. Patients are asked to wear loose-fitting undergarments; they change into supplied scrubs or a cotton gown, store personal items in a locker and sit inside the chamber, breathing oxygen through a hood. Electronic devices, lighters and matches, jewelry, non-cotton clothing, hard contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids, insulin pumps, ostomy bags, nail polish, deodorants, lip balms, perfumes, petroleum-based skin products, hair gels and sprays stay outside the chamber. Wounds should be dressed before treatment, and the team advises on suitable dressings. Patients may bring non-electronic reading material; a clinician care provider is in the chamber for every treatment, and an intercom keeps patients in contact with the team. After treatment, wound patients receive guidance on wound care and diet, and daily evaluations track healing progress. The center reports 24/7 emergency dive medicine and hyperbaric consultation and treatment capability.
