Patients must have a condition approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and a referral from their primary care doctor; a hyperbaric physician then consults with them to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Each treatment lasts about two hours; patients breathe 100% oxygen inside the chamber and can read or rest during the session. Depending on the diagnosis, the center’s providers may prescribe a series of 10 to 40 treatments (Sharp’s wound care page says patients normally need 20 to 30). Specially trained physicians and technicians monitor treatment. Before treatment starts, the team reviews possible side effects, such as a temporary change in vision or difficulty equalizing the ears, and how to handle them.
