About

The Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine is an outpatient wound center at Manchester Memorial Hospital that works in partnership with RestorixHealth. Its team includes general physicians, general and plastic surgeons, podiatrists and vascular surgeons, along with nurses and technicians trained in wound care. The center lists diabetic foot ulcers, venous and pressure ulcers, radiation wounds and bone infections among the wounds it treats, and offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wounds that have not responded to standard wound care. No referral is needed for an evaluation. The wound care medical director is Eric M. Thompson, DPM, a Hartford HealthCare Medical Group podiatrist, and the providers listed for the center's location include a physician assistant and two advanced practice registered nurses whose listed specialties include wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Planning your visit

No referral is necessary to be seen at the Center for Wound Healing, although the center recommends that patients speak with their physician about a visit.

At the first visit, staff evaluate the wound and review the patient's medical history, and tests of circulation or infection may be needed. New patients are asked to bring a list of current medications and allergies, any medical records or x-rays they have received, and their insurance card. Wound-care visits are usually weekly. Hyperbaric treatment is typically given once a day, five days a week, for about four to six weeks, and one session takes about two hours; the center's physicians say how many treatments a patient needs. Patients wear a hospital gown in the chamber and may watch television or a movie or nap. Cosmetics, perfume, hair products, deodorant, wigs, jewelry and electronic devices are not allowed in the chamber; most pacemakers are allowed. Patients should tell the hyperbaric technologist about all medications, including non-prescription drugs, and avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks for four hours before treatment. Because smoking interferes with oxygen transport, the care team works with smokers on stopping during the treatment period.
