Planning your visit
The first visit includes a wound evaluation and a review of medical history, and some patients need tests of circulation and infection. Once a treatment plan is prescribed, wound-care visits are weekly, and patients care for the wound at home as directed by the team. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is typically given five days a week for about four to six weeks, each session takes about two hours, and staff tell each patient how many treatments are needed. Patients wear a hospital gown in the chamber and may watch television or a movie or nap during treatment. Cosmetics, perfumes, hair preparations, deodorants, wigs, jewelry and electronic devices are not allowed in the chamber; most pacemakers are allowed. Patients should tell the hyperbaric technologist about all medications, including non-prescription drugs, and avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks for four hours before treatment.
