Planning your visit

Patients may refer themselves or be referred by a doctor or another healthcare professional. A wound-care physician evaluates the patient and determines whether HBOT is indicated.

Patients are asked to bring their insurance card to each visit and to call the center directly to schedule; Mount Carmel also offers an online wound care appointment request form. Registration, for which patients bring a photo ID and insurance card, is required every 90 days, and a new insurance card should be shown at the next visit if coverage changes. Each patient has a specially trained physician and a nurse case manager who manage the treatment plan. The first visit includes an examination of the wound and a review of personal and medical history; dead tissue may be removed, and tests may be done to make sure the wound is not infected. The provider then sets a treatment plan, teaches home wound care and arranges a follow-up appointment if needed; follow-up visits, where the wound is measured and progress checked, are usually weekly at first. Mount Carmel suggests a wound care visit for a sore or wound that has not healed in 30 days, one that is growing, more painful or swollen, has changed color or has an unpleasant odor, or an infected surgical wound. For HBOT, selected patients are placed in a large, clear acrylic chamber pressurized with 100% oxygen, where they can nap or watch television.
