About

Hyperbaric NC is an independent, free-standing hyperbaric clinic near Brier Creek in Raleigh, founded by Harry Kurtz, PA-C. Patients are treated in single-person Sechrist 3600H chambers, and a trained technician monitors each session. The clinic lists diabetic and other chronic wounds, tissue damage after radiation, surgical sites, grafts or flaps that are not healing, and chronic bone infections among the conditions it sees most, and reviews emerging uses case by case. It accepts referrals from physicians and coordinates wound care through its partner clinic, Wound Care NC.

Planning your visit

Treatment starts with a consultation that reviews the patient's medical history and whether HBOT is appropriate; a referral is sometimes needed, especially when insurance is involved.

Visits are by appointment only. For the consultation, the clinic suggests bringing a current medication list, an insurance card if insurance will be used, and any referral or recent records from the patient's doctor or wound care provider. Patients are asked to wear loose clothing that is easy to change out of, with cotton socks; the clinic supplies cotton clothing for use in the chamber. It recommends a balanced meal one to two hours beforehand, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol and carbonated drinks on treatment days. At each visit, staff take vitals and go over which items are allowed in the chamber, and vitals are rechecked before the patient leaves. Sessions usually run 90 to 120 minutes, with a technician monitoring and able to talk with the patient the whole time; patients can watch TV or movies, listen to music or rest. Treatment is given as a course, often several sessions a week for several weeks, and the clinic says plans range from about 5 to 10 sessions to 40 to 60 or more depending on the condition. Each patient is given their own sheets and clothing, and appointments are spaced to leave time for cleaning between sessions.
