Planning your visit
A provider evaluation is required before hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
All visits are scheduled by appointment, and most patients are referred by their primary care provider. Patients are asked to bring medical records, an insurance card, a list of current medications and a list of allergies. The first visit includes an evaluation of the wound's type, size, depth and appearance and of overall health, followed by a personalized treatment plan; the wound is measured and documented at the first appointment and at each follow-up visit. Complete treatment instructions are given after the first exam, and patients learn to care for the wound at home, including changing dressings. The team keeps the patient's regular physician informed with progress reports. The center advises avoiding smoking and all tobacco products during the course of therapy. Patients should tell the team before treatment about symptoms such as a cold, cough, flu or nausea and about any medication changes; patients with diabetes have their blood sugar checked at each visit. Hyperbaric sessions, or dives, can last 90 minutes to two hours. Patients can see their surroundings through clear sides during sessions, and a TV is available.
