Planning your visit
HBOT begins with a consultation in which clinic medical staff review the patient's health goals and decide whether the patient is a candidate.
After the consultation, the clinic draws up an individual treatment plan that sets the number of sessions, the length of each session and the recommended pressure. The clinic's HBOT page gives typical session lengths of 60 to 90 minutes in one section and 60 minutes to 2 hours in its FAQ. It suggests as few as 5 sessions for general health and maintenance and 3 to 5 sessions per week for more serious conditions. Patients are asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to avoid scented perfumes, lotions and heavy jewelry. A safety check takes place before entering the chamber, where the patient lies down. A staff member stays with the patient until the chamber reaches its maximum pressure, coaches ear-equalization techniques and lowers the pressure if discomfort continues. An intercom allows communication during treatment, and patients may use a phone or tablet, listen to music, meditate or nap.
