About

Salerno Wellness is the functional and integrative medicine practice of Dr. John Salerno, a board-certified family physician, with offices in Shelton, Connecticut, and Manhattan. It offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy at both offices in a monitored chamber, and its HBOT page lists chronic wounds and diabetic ulcers, traumatic brain injury, radiation injuries, athletic recovery, post-surgical healing and multiple sclerosis among the conditions it treats. Dr. Salerno and his team evaluate patients and supervise sessions. Other services include IV nutrient therapy, hormone replacement and peptide treatments.

Planning your visit

Patients are asked to fill out, print and bring the practice's patient forms, including a separate HBOT consent form, before their visit. All appointments require a credit card on file, and new and established patients must give 48 hours' notice to cancel to avoid a missed-appointment fee. The HBOT consent form says treatment protocols may require at least 20 sessions depending on the condition, with no more than two one-hour sessions a day at least four hours apart; the HBOT page adds that protocols for conditions such as TBI or radiation damage generally run 20 to 40 sessions, four to five days a week. The form lists conditions that rule out treatment or need a physician's written clearance, including untreated pneumothorax, tuberculosis, pregnancy and active chemotherapy. Only cotton clothing or clinic-provided scrubs may be worn in the chamber; metal items, zippers, buttons, jewelry and shoes are not allowed, and socks are provided. Phones, lighters, computers and other flammable items are not permitted in or near the chamber, only water is allowed inside, and perfume, oils, hairspray and makeup should not be used before treatment. Patients with a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator need a clearance letter from their cardiologist, diabetic patients have a glucose check before treatment, and the form advises against flying or travel to high altitude for 48 hours afterward.
