About

Hyperbaric Medical Services (HMS) is an outpatient wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in San Francisco. It is closely affiliated with Hyperbaric Consultants Medical Group, a team of hyperbaric physicians, and uses monoplace chambers with a supervising hyperbaric physician on the premises. The center treats chronic and non-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds and radiation-related wounds, and lists other HBOT indications such as osteomyelitis, carbon monoxide poisoning and sudden hearing loss. It sees both physician-referred and self-referred patients from across the Bay Area.

Planning your visit

No referral is required for a wound-care evaluation. Patients can contact the center directly; the team can coordinate with their physician or specialist.

New patients are typically seen within a few days, and urgent wounds can get expedited appointments. Referring physicians fax the clinic's treatment referral form with the patient's insurance information and medical records. Intake forms can be printed and brought to the first visit or completed electronically, and patients are asked to read the treatment guide and consent forms beforehand. Most HBOT sessions last about two hours and some indications take up to four; the hyperbaric physician sets the session length and the number of treatments. Patients are asked to arrive 30 minutes early to change and have their vital signs, and blood sugar if applicable, checked. They should not drink carbonated beverages within one hour of treatment, and smokers are asked not to smoke before or right after treatment. Drinking water, glasses and 100% cotton garments may go into the monoplace chamber; synthetics, oil-based products, make-up, hair products, hearing aids, contact lenses, phones, watches, newspapers and food may not. A nurse or certified hyperbaric technician monitors each treatment, a supervising hyperbaric physician is on the premises, and staff coach patients on clearing their ears during pressurization. Patients can watch TV or movies, listen to music or sleep. Visitors are welcome, but children must stay in the reception area. There is a patient loading zone in front and street parking nearby; the adjacent Walgreens lot is not for clinic parking. Muni routes 2, 38, 24 and 31 serve the center.
