About

Iowa HBOT is a hyperbaric clinic in Des Moines that offers treatment in a hard-sided Fortius 420-EXP chamber and a soft-sided Vitaeris320 chamber. Co-founder Dr. Chris LoRang, a chiropractic physician certified by the International Board of Undersea Medicine as a Functional Medicine Hyperbaric Clinician, works with patients on their consultations and treatment protocols. The clinic says it mostly sees off-label conditions and lists concussion, traumatic brain injury, long-haul COVID-19, Lyme disease and post-surgical healing among them. It also rents and sells chambers for home use.

Planning your visit

Before the first visit, patients fill out three new-patient forms and email them to the clinic or bring them along; patients without a printer or computer can arrive 15 minutes early to complete them at the office. Bring photo identification and wear comfortable clothing; patients under 18 need a parent or guardian at the first appointment. Typical sessions are 60 minutes at treatment pressure, so allow 70–80 minutes for the whole appointment; 90-minute sessions are also offered. The clinic says 10–40 hours of treatment are typical, depending on the patient's history, symptoms and goals. Patients schedule by phone or email, and enrolled patients can also book online. Payment is due at each appointment. Treatment with 100% oxygen in the hard-sided chamber requires a referral or prescription, and the clinic's nurse practitioner can arrange a telehealth appointment for it. The clinic lists use of bleomycin, disulfiram or mafenide acetate, and known or suspected hereditary spherocytosis, sickle cell anemia or COPD, as contraindications to care. Patients who need lodging during their course of treatment can get a discounted rate at Home2 Suites by Hilton Des Moines at Drake University, an extended-stay hotel about a 4-minute drive from the clinic.
